Public Consultation - Draft COAG Report on the Control of Chemicals of Security Concern

Release date: 25 February 2008

A series of public information sessions will be held across NSW to examine the threat to Australia from the possible use of chemicals for terrorism purposes.  The sessions follow the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) draft Report on the Control of Chemicals of Security Concern.

The Commander of the Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command, Assistant Commissioner Peter Dein said, “In order to ensure the continued safety of the NSW community, the NSW Police Force is actively contributing to this report to minimise the potential misuse of chemicals.

“A key challenge of this review has been to establish an effective means of improving the security of chemicals while ensuring they remain accessible to legitimate users,” Assistant Commissioner Dein said.

Commander of the Counter Terrorism Co-ordinated Response Group, Superintendent John Stapleton said, “The NSW Police Force in partnership with the Department of Premier and Cabinet are conducting a series of free information sessions across regional and metropolitan NSW.”

“The information sessions will provide an opportunity for business and community members, with an interest in the production, manufacture, transportation, use or disposal of chemicals to be informed about the report and its recommendations.

“The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet is seeking input by interested parties on the recommendations by 4 April 2008,” Superintendent Stapleton said.
