Police Minister Remembers Victims of Hilton Hotel Bombing

Release date: 13 February 2008

Police Minister David Campbell has urged the community to pause and remember the victims of the 1978 Hilton Hotel bombing, including slain Police Officer Paul Birmistriw.

Mr Campbell said today marks the 30th Anniversary of the bombing, which occurred outside the Hilton Hotel in George St, in the early hours of 13 February 1978.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the bombing, the Hilton Hotel will today officially unveil a plaque in memory of the 3 people who were killed in the blast.

"Leaders of 12 Asian and Pacific member nations were staying at the Hotel as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Regional Meetings," Mr Campbell said.

"Just before 1am a bomb that was planted inside a rubbish bin outside the hotel exploded when the bin was emptied into a garbage truck.

"NSW Police Officer Paul Birmistriw was killed in the line of duty as a result of this gutless attack. He was out doing his job on behalf of the NSW community.

"Garbage collectors William Favell and Alex Carter were also killed by the blast.

"Another police officer, Terry Griffiths suffered horrific injuries in the blast that was a direct attack on our safety and freedom.

"Some of the physical injuries may have healed over time but the mental scars remain and will live with those affected forever.

"This was an event that outraged Australia and stunned the world.

Mr Campbell said the 30 year anniversary served as a stark reminder about the dangers our Police Officers face on a daily basis as a result of performing their regular duties.

"It’s pretty hard to believe that it was 30 years ago because it was, and remains, such a clear memory," he said.

"Sydneysiders were shocked that such a heinous act of destruction could be perpetrated on what was such an iconic landmark.

"I encourage people who may be in the CBD today or those that remember the incident well to stop and think about the terrible tragedy.

"The Hilton Hotel may have been rebuilt since then but many lives have not been," Mr Campbell said.
