Engaging on counter terrorism issues
The New South Wales (NSW) Police Force is committed to engaging with the community on counter terrorism issues.
As the lead agency for counter terrorism in NSW, the police are keen to improve police understanding of community concerns relating to the terrorism powers, and to increase community understanding of the terrorism arrangements in NSW.
Community Contact Unit
The NSW Police Force Community Contact Unit commenced operating in July 2007 and is staffed by police officers from a diverse range of backgrounds.
The role of the Community Contact Unit is to actively engage with the community to promote positive working relationships, develop community partnerships, and increase understanding of NSW Police Force counter terrorism response arrangements.
The unit will act as a conduit for communication between the NSW Police Force Counter Terrorism & Special Tactics Command and communities to improve the NSW Police understanding of, and response to, community issues and concerns arising from the exercise of the counter terrorism laws.
The unit is also responsible for monitoring and developing NSW Police Force policy responses to incidences of hate crimes within the state.
