Message from the Premier

Morris Iemma, Premier of NSW As the Premier of New South Wales (NSW), I would like to welcome you to secureNSW – a joint counter terrorism initiative of my Department and the NSW Police Force.

The NSW Government has made counter terrorism a priority since the tragic events of September 11 and the Bali and London bombings, significantly boosting the State’s counter terrorism capability.

As we know the threat of terrorism on our soil is very real – Australian citizens have been targeted in bombings on our doorstep, and criminals have been apprehended in the midst of planning attacks in NSW.

Terrorism is a national issue, and we are committed to working together with the state/terrority and federal governments to combat terrorism in any form. There is no more important service than keeping our families safe, and NSW leads the nation with the toughest counter terrorism laws and the world’s most technically advanced equipment.

The face of terrorism is changing and evolving, so we must constantly review and reassess our plans. This requires maintaining a strong and vigilant approach to protecting our community, and developing new and innovative methods to fight terrorism.

Public information will be of vital importance during an incident – providing timely and accurate information could save lives. The secureNSW website is one part of our multi-channel approach to informing the NSW community before and/or during an incident.

This unique site is a joint partnership between the NSW Police Force and my Department, and demonstrates our commitment to working together on this very important issue.

secureNSW is a one stop shop for counter terrorism information for the NSW community. You'll find a great deal of information on this website – everything from the plans and arrangements that the NSW Government will activate in a terrorist incident to details on what you personally can do to protect yourself and your family.

Nobody can guarantee that there will not be a terrorist attack. By their very nature, they are unpredictable. Consequently, we must do whatever it takes to minimise and prevent the risk of an attack while balancing the freedom and lifestyle that we enjoy in Australia.

I urge you to take the time to explore secureNSW and develop your understanding of this issue, as well as confidence in the good work that is being done by the NSW Government.

Morris Iemma
Premier of NSW
